McCarthy's Corner - Vol 7 CeeBees drop two close games, Escott and Shute continue to rack up points
The HGOE CeeBee Stars dropped a pair of close games in Avalon East Senior Hockey League action this past weekend. At the Jack Byrne Arena this past Friday night the St. John's Caps came away with a slim 6-5 win over the visiting Stars. Jordan Escott notched a pair of goals for the CeeBees while Mark Barrett, Brett Shute, and Lucas Wiseman had single markers. Caps' goal scorers were unavailable. This past Saturday night the CBS Blues slipped by the host CeeBee Stars 5-4. The teams were deadlocked at 4 at the end of the second period but the Blues had the only goal of the final frame to take the narrow win. Nick Lindstrom, Ryan Dawson, Brett Shute and Jordan Escott had the tallies for the CeeBees. Tyler Nickson led the Blues with two goals while Kyle Tibbo, Adam Nolan and Michael Ryan rounded out the scoring for CBS. Blues' goaltender Redmond Hunt, acquired in a trade from Clarenville earlier in the week, picked up his first win between the pipes for his new team. Another newcomer for CBS who made an impact was Danny Wicks who was drafted by the Blues earlier in the week. The former Grand Falls Cataract  chipped in with two assists to help the Blues to their second win of the season. The team which made the biggest splash in the latest league draft was the Clarenville Caribous who nabbed the rights to goaltender AJ Whiffen by drafting him first overall. Whiffen, who is considered by many as the top goalie in the province, backstopped the CeeBee Stars to their latest Herder Memorial Trophy Championship in 2017. The third and final player draft for this season will take place in January.
The CeeBees have two more road games before the Christmas break, Sunday Dec. 12th at Southern Shore and Saturday Dec 18th at CBS. CeeBee Stars' last home game before the break is this Saturday Dec. 11th when they host the St. John's Caps.  Note this weeks game time is 8:30pm puck drop.
